Mammoplasty (Breast Reduction)
Women who have oversized breasts and have problems with their breast size undergo breast reduction surgery. The surgeon effectively removes excess tissue and skin to fit the size of the breast to fit the body and resizes oversized breasts to normal size. Mammoplasty is a safe and effective option for women with large and heavy breasts. Women with large breasts, in addition to dissatisfaction with the appearance of their body, suffer from physical pain and discomfort such as back and lower back pain, especially neck pain or pain in the shoulders. In addition, in some physical activities and sports, they face limitations.
Surgical method
Usually two techniques are used:
- General mammoplasty with short scar (wound): In this method, an incision is made in the nipple area and the incision generally continues down to the chest, which avoids creating a horizon incision under the breast, and by reducing the total length of the wound about 50%, it provides a superior result and a more natural breast shape. In women with very large breasts, it is better to use the traditional method to reduce breast size.
- Traditional breast reduction: In this method, the incision is made in the form of an anchor (in the form of T inverted: ꓕ) vertically down the middle of the breast, which extends vertically to the bottom of the middle of the breast and horizontally along the bottom of the breast. This method is used both to reduce the size of the breast and to raise the nipple to a more natural point, which is also called a breast lift. In fact, in this surgical method, both breast lift and breast size reduction are performed simultaneously.
In both surgical methods, the sensation of the breast is preserved. The choice of surgical type is based on the surgeon's diagnosis and the condition and shape of the patient's breast, which is done after the initial examination.
In either case, breast reduction surgery involves removing excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue through an incision in the breast. Excess fat may also be removed by cosmetic surgeons through liposuction along with other techniques. Sometimes only liposuction is used, and that is when the extra skin shape is not important. Sometimes a narrow tube is inserted into the wound to drain blood and secretions, which is called a drain.
