The large intestine is involved in the formation of the lower part of the gastrointestinal tract. This organ absorbs food and nutrients and excretes wastes that attach to the anus through the rectum. It is used to examine the colon and colonoscopy, and is used as a screening method for colon cancer and other diseases that help the doctor diagnose the following:
- Investigate the symptoms of cancer and other problems
- Find the cause of unexplained changes in bowel habits
- Evaluation of symptoms of abdominal pain or bleeding
- Find the cause of chronic constipation or unexplained diarrhea
According to statistics, 90% of polyps or tumors can be detected through colonoscopy screening.
Method
The patient is placed on his side and his knees are placed near the chest. A sedative is injected. The doctor examines the rectum and large intestine with a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera called a colonoscope. It is possible to sample and even remove small polyps. It is also possible to take photos. The camera at the end of the colonoscope transmits the images to the monitor. For better visibility, the gut is filled with carbon dioxide, which is safe.
Colonoscopy is recommended for people over the age of 50 or people who are moderately at risk for colon cancer.
