Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is a closed joint surgery technique that has been popular today because of less complications rather than open surgery. In this method, due to the least incision in the surgery, the complications of the operation are minimized. An arthroscope is a surgical instrument used by orthopedic specialists to diagnose or treat a disease by looking inside the joint. The word arthroscopy means to see inside the joint. So an arthroscope is actually a device to see inside the joint; Through which the orthopedist can perform surgical treatment. Diagnosis of joint diseases has certain stages. The doctor first examines the patient by performing an examination and then by performing tests and imaging such as plain radiography, CT scan or MRI. When it is not possible to accurately diagnose the disease after doing this, the disease can be diagnosed through an arthroscope and with seeing inside the joint.

The most important part of an arthroscope is a hollow tube about the size of a straw. The specialist inserts the tube into the joint space of the patient through a small incision. This tool has a camera lens and light source and allows the orthopedist to see inside the joint. The camera displays a detailed image on the monitor. The surgeon inserts another narrow tube through another slit to insert sterile fluid. This removes turbid fluid inside the joint; And a clear liquid replaces it. This is done in order to see better inside the joint and also to increase the volume inside the joint. In this way, the joint components are more spaced apart and better seen. As a result, space is provided for the arthroscope to move in the joint. An arthroscope is used to treat ligaments' rupture in the shoulder and knee. Damaged cartilage in the shoulder or knee and damaged meniscus in the knee are repaired or removed by an arthroscope. Arthroscopes are also used to treat carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrist. Arthroscopic surgery is performed on the knee, shoulder, elbow, hip, wrist and ankle. Also surgery on the joint disc, pelvis, and spine are performed by arthroscopy.

Recovery after arthroscopic surgery

Patients after surgery may have slight pain in the joint area. The orthopedist will prescribe painkillers such as aspirin or other medications to help the patient recover as needed to prevent blood clots. If needed, a cane, splint, or sling can be used for support during recovery, as recommended by your doctor. Arthroscopic surgery usually causes less joint pain and stiffness than open surgery. It can be said that in general, the recovery time in arthroscopic surgery is less. Patients are usually admitted to Mortaz Hospital on the same day of surgery. After the operation, their movement characteristics are checked to prepare them for leave the day after surgery. After this surgery, the patient has small wounds that have occurred due to the entry of arthroscopic instruments into the body. Wounds should be kept as dry as possible for better healing. For this purpose, they can be covered with a plastic cover when taking a shower.
