Can diabetics do this surgery?

Cataract is a disease in which the lens of the eye becomes blurred. Various factors are involved in its occurrence and cause impaired vision. It is treated by removing the lens from the eye and replacing it with an artificial lens that does not deteriorate and always remains in the eye. Problems that cataracts cause for the patient include vision problems, night vision problems, discomfort in the face of light, the appearance of a halo of light and diplopia.

Surgical method

One of the surgical methods of cataract is facoemulsificacion technique, in which ultrasound waves are used to break the lens. The device used to crush the lens in this method has a narrow thickness and enters the eye through a cut of about 3 mm. The crushed lens is then sucked by the device. Because this incision is so small, it usually does not need stitches and heals on its own. After removing the patient’s blurred lens, a clear synthetic lens is inserted into the eye through the same small incision and placed inside the eye in its proper place and gets fixed.

This procedure usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes and does not require general anesthesia and can be performed under local anesthesia. In cases where the lens is stiff and cannot be broken by ultrasound, the surgeon uses the extra-capsule method, in which the blurred lens is properly removed from the capsule, which requires larger incisions and requires thin stitches. It should be noted that the recovery period of these patients is longer. For surgery, local anesthesia can be used with eye drops to reduce pain and inflammation. During the operation, the person is fully awake and asked to look at the light of a surgical microscope. Different lenses can be used in cataract surgery:

• Monofocal lenses: This type of lens reduces or eliminates the need for a person to use glasses for long vision, but requires glasses for reading.
• Multi-focal lenses: The need for glasses in people who use these lenses for near and far vision is reduced or eliminated.
• Toric Intraocular Lenses for Astigmatism: Astigmatism blurs near or far vision. Despite astigmatism, the cornea is not round and regular and, like an egg, has two different radii of curvature.

In cataract surgery for different people, by choosing the right type of lens, in addition to the problem of myopia and hyperopia, astigmatism is also corrected in most cases, and the patient usually does not need to use glasses for long-distance vision after surgery.
