Hysterectomy or removal of the uterus

In this type of surgery, the uterus is removed from the body, which is done with or without the removal of the ovaries. It should be noted that the ovaries secrete female hormones, and if they are not removed from the body, the patient’s body system remains the same as before, meaning that his sexual desire does not change and female hormones are released. Sometimes the uterus bleeds that is not controllable with medication or there are cellular changes in its tissue. Such as cancerous lesions or large fibroids or genetic changes, in which the surgeon has to remove the uterus from the patient’s body.

Surgical method

Hysterectomy is performed in two ways, open and closed:

  • A. Laparoscopic hysterectomy (closed method): One of the relatively new methods is laparoscopic hysterectomy that does not require cutting and opening the abdomen. This type of surgery is performed using a device called a laparoscope. In this procedure, the uterus is removed through small incisions made in the abdomen. In this method, the uterus is removed through the vagina or through the same small incisions made. Laparoscopic hysterectomy has many advantages for the patient compared to other methods. In this method, septic shock and infection after surgery are less seen than the open and vaginal method.
  • B. Abdominal or open hysterectomy: One of the most common methods of hysterectomy surgery is abdominal or abdominal hysterectomy. In a hysterectomy through the abdomen, a 5-to-7-inch incision is made in the abdomen and then the uterus is removed. One of the complications of abdominal hysterectomy is postoperative scarring, especially in obese people. It is important to note that the appropriate method for surgery is determined only by the surgeon and the surgeon chooses the hysterectomy technique after examining the patient’s condition. Both methods can be performed under both general and spinal anesthesia.
