Breast lift (mastopexy)

Breast lift surgery or mastopexy is a surgery to lift and reshape sagging breasts. With the loss of elasticity of the skin, the breasts often lose their beautiful and firm shape and gradually become sagging.
Mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola (dark halo around the nipple). If your breasts are small or have lost volume (for example after childbirth), breast augmentation with mastopexy can increase their firmness and size at the same time. In fact, mastopexy can be performed at the same time as breast prosthesis.
Suitable people for breast lift: The best results are usually obtained for women who have small and sagging breasts. Breasts of any size can be lifted, but in large and heavy breasts, reduction mammoplasty is recommended with a lift. Many women who have stretched, cracked, or shrunk skin due to pregnancy or breastfeeding seek out mastopexy.

Surgical method

The patient is expected to be hospitalized for two to three days. Mastopexy usually lasts one and a half to three hours. The techniques vary, but the most common method involves making an anchor incision along the natural contour line of the chest. Breast lift is performed under general anesthesia. An incision is made around the area under observation. This incision defines the area where the extra skin of the breast is to be removed and also the new location of the nipple.
When excess breast skin is removed, the nipple and areola are moved to a higher position. The surgeon then lowers the skin around the areola and contracts it to restore the shape of the breast. The sutures are usually made around the areola, along a vertical line from the nipple to the crease below the breast. Some patients, especially those with relatively small breasts with minimal sagging, may need less incisions for corrective procedures.
Breast prosthesis surgery with a breast lift is a process in which the prosthetic surgeon places a bag or so-called pocket in just below the breast tissue or deeper and under the chest muscles. After surgery, an elastic bandage or a surgical bra should be worn over the dressing. The breasts are swollen and painful for a day or two. Wound healing is a gradual process and can be well stimulated within one to two days. But returning to work can take a time from a week to a month, depending on the job.

After entering the hospital and final admission, you will be taken to the international patients’ ward by the head of the international patients’ ward to get acquainted with the treatment staff and your doctor. There, your specialist doctor will examine you. In this session, the doctor will discuss with you the reason why you want to do this cosmetic operation, the shape you want, the breast size you expect, and issues such as these. Your medical record will be created and all information such as the pills you are taking or your treatment history or possible problems you have had in the past will be reviewed and recorded by the medical team. You will then be admitted to be monitored to prepare for the operation. In the meantime, you will be evaluated by a nurse and your blood pressure will be checked and a blood sample will be taken from you to register your blood type and that you will go to the laboratory to check your blood sugar and cholesterol, etc. Your breasts are photographed so that the doctor and you can compare the results before and after the operation. Mammography of your breasts is also performed for diagnostic purposes at the discretion of your doctor. You will also be examined by a cardiologist and you will have an ECG taken from you and an echocardiogram if necessary. You will then be examined by an anesthesiologist to determine if you can have this surgery. You will be given information about the operation and pre-surgery training.

You will then be taken to the operation room at a pre-arranged time. You will be anesthetized and after a few minutes your surgery begins. Then one of the surgical methods is used on you. Then you will be taken to the recovery ward to be monitored and your vital signs will be recorded second by second and you will be constantly monitored by the anesthesiologist and surgeon to regain consciousness. Once you regain consciousness, you will either return to your ward or be taken to the intensive care unit as determined by your doctor. Your medication, which was started the day before to prevent infection, will continue. Also, your bleeding will be completely under control and your dressings will be changed regularly. Serum therapy will begin for you to regain physical strength. After being awakened, you will be examined in the ward by your doctor. If necessary, tests are taken to ensure your health. During this period, according to the doctor's diagnosis, either a painkiller is used for you, or a pain pump is installed. Your doctor will examine your breasts and their shape and compare them to their previous shape.

If your condition is stable, the necessary training after discharge for home care and proper exercise or diet will be taught by the treatment team. If needed and at the doctor's discretion, you may be monitored for an extra night, otherwise you can be discharged on the second day. Your medications will be adjusted and instructions on how to use these medications at home will be taught to you.

It is better to stay in Iran for a week after discharge to avoid a long trip and to easily access the doctor and be examined if you need to. But if you want, you can return home any day you want from the day after the discharge. We will not leave you alone and whenever you have any questions, you can contact us or even have a video call with your doctor through the head of the department. In addition, your ward manager will be in touch with you in the first week after your discharge to ensure your health.
