Breast lift surgery or mastopexy is a surgery to lift and reshape sagging breasts. With the loss of elasticity of the skin, the breasts often lose their beautiful and firm shape and gradually become sagging.
Mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola (dark halo around the nipple). If your breasts are small or have lost volume (for example after childbirth), breast augmentation with mastopexy can increase their firmness and size at the same time. In fact, mastopexy can be performed at the same time as breast prosthesis.
Suitable people for breast lift: The best results are usually obtained for women who have small and sagging breasts. Breasts of any size can be lifted, but in large and heavy breasts, reduction mammoplasty is recommended with a lift. Many women who have stretched, cracked, or shrunk skin due to pregnancy or breastfeeding seek out mastopexy.
Surgical method
The patient is expected to be hospitalized for two to three days. Mastopexy usually lasts one and a half to three hours. The techniques vary, but the most common method involves making an anchor incision along the natural contour line of the chest. Breast lift is performed under general anesthesia. An incision is made around the area under observation. This incision defines the area where the extra skin of the breast is to be removed and also the new location of the nipple.
When excess breast skin is removed, the nipple and areola are moved to a higher position. The surgeon then lowers the skin around the areola and contracts it to restore the shape of the breast. The sutures are usually made around the areola, along a vertical line from the nipple to the crease below the breast. Some patients, especially those with relatively small breasts with minimal sagging, may need less incisions for corrective procedures.
Breast prosthesis surgery with a breast lift is a process in which the prosthetic surgeon places a bag or so-called pocket in just below the breast tissue or deeper and under the chest muscles. After surgery, an elastic bandage or a surgical bra should be worn over the dressing. The breasts are swollen and painful for a day or two. Wound healing is a gradual process and can be well stimulated within one to two days. But returning to work can take a time from a week to a month, depending on the job.
